Retinol is a popular skincare ingredient for improving the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone and skin texture. But when your skin feels dry or easily irritated, you may prefer to focus your routine on hydration, comfort and a healthy-looking glow.
At MĒNOS, that means choosing ingredients with a clear role in the formula, rather than asking botanicals to act like prescription skincare. This guide explores five ingredients found in our current products and how to build them into your routine.
What is retinol?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A in the retinoid family. Over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids differ in strength and formulation. Hydrating ingredients and botanical oils are not the same as retinoids, and should not be described as delivering identical results.
What are the challenges of using retinol?
Because products and their concentrations of retinol vary, and because conventional retinol can have harsh side effects, it’s important that users go slow as they introduce these products into their routines.
These side effects may include redness, dryness, peeling, and irritation or inflammation. Retinol can also make skin more sensitive to the sun, and those who are pregnant should consult with their doctors about retinoid use, as it is generally advised against during pregnancy.
If you use a prescribed retinoid, speak with your clinician before changing treatment. This guide is skincare education, not medical advice or a recommendation to replace treatment for acne, eczema or another skin condition.
Five ingredients to consider beyond retinol
These ingredients offer a different approach: replenishing moisture, supporting the skin barrier and improving the appearance of dull or dehydrated skin. They are not interchangeable with retinol, and natural ingredients are not automatically irritation-free.
1. Niacinamide: barrier-focused hydration
Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, features in our current REBALANCE: Seasonal Hydrating Face Serum. The Golden Forest edition pairs it with panthenol, linden flower water, green tea and saffron in a lightweight formula designed to support moisture retention and a smoother, more balanced appearance.
Choose REBALANCE when hydration and comfort are the priorities in your daily routine. Niacinamide is also listed in the vitamin B complex in REVIVE: Hydrating Sheet Mask, an option for a dedicated hydration moment.
2. Vitamin C: a focus on radiance
For dull-looking skin, our current RENEW: Vitamin C Boost Sheet Mask features liposomal vitamin C in a hydrating biocellulose mask. The formula is designed to leave skin looking brighter, more even and refreshed.
Vitamin C and retinol are different ingredients. Here, the focus is antioxidant care and the appearance of radiance, not a promise of retinoid-like results.
3. Snow mushroom: replenishing hydration
Snow mushroom, listed as Tremella fuciformis extract, is another ingredient in RENEW. It contributes to the formula’s hydration-focused approach for skin that feels tired or depleted.
If your goal is a softer, more hydrated feel, this is a different starting point from adding another intensive active. Follow the product’s directions and introduce new products gradually.
4. Squalane: lightweight softness
The current Twilight Bloom edition of RITUAL: Seasonal Balancing Face Oil combines olive-derived squalane with borage, evening primrose and green tea seed oils. The blend is designed to soften skin and leave a luminous finish without a heavy feel.
Use it as the final step in your skincare ritual when skin needs extra nourishment. This is a moisture-focused face oil, not a retinol substitute or a treatment for acne or eczema.
5. Colloidal oats: comfort in a seasonal formula
Our current Fall Folk infusion combines juniper and colloidal oats. You’ll find this seasonal ingredient pairing in REBALANCE and in our current sheet-mask formulas, where the focus is softness, replenishing moisture and skin comfort.
For a hydration-focused mask, REVIVE pairs the infusion with calendula, sweet grass and a vitamin B complex. Choose based on your skin’s needs and the full ingredient list, rather than assuming that every botanical will suit sensitive skin.
Build a simple MĒNOS routine
You don’t need to add all five ingredients as separate steps. Start with the product that matches your main goal: REBALANCE for daily hydration, RENEW for a radiance-focused mask, or RITUAL for nourishing softness.
For a coordinated cleanse, hydrate and seal routine, explore The Nervous System Kit. It brings together RESTORE Liquid Balm Cleanser, REBALANCE Face Serum and RITUAL Face Oil, with a straightforward morning and evening ritual.
A few precautions before you begin
Patch-test new products, introduce one at a time, and stop use if irritation develops. Follow product directions and use daily sun protection. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a skin condition or using prescription skincare, ask your clinician about the complete formula before adding a new product.
MĒNOS seasonal formulas can change. The ingredient examples above reflect the current product listings at the time of this refresh; always review the latest ingredient list on the linked product page and your product packaging before use.
