Sheet masks often get filed under "fun extra," something you do for a photo. Used well, they're one of the simplest ways to give tired, thirsty skin a real reset.
They also give you something most of us rarely get: 15 minutes where you're not allowed to do anything else.
What is a sheet mask?
A sheet mask is a face-shaped sheet soaked in a concentrated serum. You lay it on clean skin, leave it for 10–20 minutes, then press the leftover serum in.
They were popularized by Korean skincare and are now everywhere. The quality, though, varies enormously, both in the serum and in the sheet itself.
How does a sheet mask work?
The sheet acts as a temporary seal. While it sits on your face, it slows evaporation and keeps the serum in contact with your skin. A serum you'd normally pat on and walk away from gets a full 15 minutes to sink in.
That's why skin often looks plumper and feels softer right after a mask. It's a concentrated dose of hydration, delivered slowly.
Sheet mask materials, compared
- Cotton or non-woven fabric: The most common and the cheapest. It works, but it can lift at the edges and absorbs a fair share of the serum itself.
- Hydrogel: A jelly-like sheet. It's cooling, but it's often made with synthetic polymers.
- Biocellulose: A plant-based material grown through fermentation. It fits like a second skin and releases serum evenly. Here's a deeper look at biocellulose.
What can a sheet mask do for your skin?
- Deep hydration: Skin looks plumper and feels less tight.
- A calmer look: Soothing botanicals help skin look less red and less stressed.
- Brightness: Antioxidants like vitamin C help dull skin look more even and rested.
- A pause: This one gets overlooked. Lying still and breathing slowly is one of the kindest things you can do for stress-reactive skin. (Why that matters.)
How to use a sheet mask, step by step
- Start with clean skin. Use a gentle cleanser; RESTORE is made for exactly this.
- Smooth it on from the center out. Line up the eyes and mouth, then press it flat so there are no air pockets.
- Leave it for 10–15 minutes. Not longer than the instructions say. A mask that dries out can start pulling moisture back.
- Remove it, then press in the rest. Don't rinse. Pat the remaining serum into your face, neck, and chest.
- Seal it in with a face oil or moisturizer. RITUAL Face Oil locks in all that hydration.
How often should you use a sheet mask?
For most skin, 1–2 times a week is the sweet spot. If your skin is very dry, or you're traveling or prepping for an event, you can use one a few days in a row.
